Bomb damage in Cheshire during World War II
Everything is tidy now, bomb sites have been built over and blown apart buildings are repaired or replaced. But it did happen, years of terrifying air raids while bombs rained down.
This makes our collection of over 400 bomb damage photos even more important. Lest we forget...
During WW2, the police co-ordinated air raid response. Cheshire received many hits from bombs because of its closeness to Manchester, Liverpool and the Mersey docks.
1000 kgs German Bomb. Length 5ft 6 inches. Struck 41 Water Lane, Wilmslow, went through the roof and bedroom floor, came to rest under the kitchen floor at a depth of 6 ft.
Martin Street, Crewe April 1941. There were a total of 16 persons killed some of whom were sheltering in an surface air raid shelter in Martin Street, the debris of which is shown in the photo.
